1.5 Bugs

Just started to use 1.5 Beta. Setup one account, checking. Went to add a deposit from my pension source. I did not see how you can set up an account that has a deposit of the net income after payment to Federal and State Tax authorities. In Quicken windows this is simple. In any event, I was trying to set it up as well as I could and I used a deposit for the full amount and then split to Federal and State tax buckets. When I tried to enter the amount for the federal tax in the split, I got the spinning ball and MW crashed. I restarted and tried again This time I entered the date in the transaction dialogue and cannot get out of the date field. Tab, enter etc do not get me out of the field. I can enter text in the date field which should not be allowed. I am not sure how stable 1.5 is but I have had several problems just starting my use of it.

There are still some bugs in the 1.5 beta, sorry. We are working on it. As for restricting input of dates to numbers only, we try to keep data entry flexible. For example, you can enter a date as just the day or the day and month and use any delimiter to separate them.

As for splitting out gross wage amounts, that's something you don't have to do in MoneyWell. Unlike Quicken, MoneyWell is designed to help you proactively manage your cash flow. You might find that you're more productive just entering the net wage amount and letting your employer payroll paperwork take care of the reporting of the taxes.

BTW, the date entry is forcing me to use nothing earlier than 01 Feb 2010. Apparently I can't enter anything before that... I can't classify it as a true "bug" yet, but I'm assuming I should be able to enter any past date I want, yes?

Mat: That's probably because you have a non-standard custom date format set up in your OS X System Preferences. Try changing it back to default and let me know if that works for you.

I'll give it a shot, but it really seems odd to have all of those different
currencies and options, but the date is not allowed to be out of USA format.

Kevin, that does "correct" the problem. So very technically, it's a
    "feature" that is missing.

As such, can I request that MoneyWell respect custom or at least Non-USA
    date settings?

    Thanks. :)

Mat: You don't have to use the U.S. format for dates, just stick to numeric formats for the short date. Feel free to order and use different delimiters for the short format. MoneyWell just can't handle the month name as an input value.

Then let me amend that to a request for date fields to accept medium date
    formats! :)

All numbers on dates gets confusing!

Mat: I can give you different date display formats, but the data entry will probably stay numeric.

That's a big improvement. The entry isn't so important, but I'd *really*
like to see a calendar pop-out / icon to the right of the date field, too.
That way, if anyone is confused, they can click in a date.

BTW, thanks for the conversation. Just a few random thoughts while I'm
    thinking about it...

First, I like the work you've done with 1.5... It's very clear.

Second, you push the paradigm of "envelope budgeting". Consider creating an
envelope icon set -- I know you think buckets, but for what it's worth, it
took me longer to wrap my mind around buckets, but I understood envelopes
    right away.

And finally for now, you might want to consider nested buckets / categories.
I'd like to bundle my utilities, my food, my house categories, etc. It
would be very cool if these categories had % stats, too.

I'm looking forward to the iPhone app.

    beta. :)

This is what happens when you get a Finance major / IT Admin geeked about a
    budget. Too many ideas!

OK, one more... for 2.0... self-adjusting buckets based on spending.

    Thanks for listening.

Mat: A pop-up calendar for input is coming but I don't hear from too many people that they are confused when entering dates.

I'm glad you like where MoneyWell is heading. The reason MoneyWell uses buckets is that it works with the water theme we have and I've always used the term "buckets" when talking about dividing up money. If you can visualize money in an envelope, a different container shouldn't make much difference, but for us, it makes a huge difference in marketing differentiation.

Bucket groups should appear in our 2.0 release, which should help you organize and group your buckets.

Keep the ideas coming, we always consider customer suggestions!

Entering dates is not so much confusing, but there is a little clunkiness when you're past either the current month, or the month most recently in that field, A simple click from a calendar pop-up would be more convenient than the current options of multiple keystrokes to change the month/date. At least IMHO...

And that's why it's coming. I like giving people options.
